Foil backed rhinestones which are also called flatbacks or non hotfix crystals have no sticky back pad just a lead crystal face with a silver foil backing. The foil backing acts as a mirror so that when light passes through the crystal it is reflected to give a more dazzling appearance to the rhinestone. They can be applied to just about any surface and are by far the most popular type of flatback crystal. Depending on the surface they are to be attached to you can find a suitable adhesive that will do the trick. Glue such as e6000 is often used to attach crystals because it’s an industrial strength glue that sets like a clear rubber, so is flexible, waterproof and provides an extremely strong bond once dry. The adhesive is one part epoxy so does have extremely strong fumes which is why protective equipment needs to be used to protect the user from any harmful chemicals in the fumes. An alternative to e6000 is Gemtac glue which is manufactured by Beacon Adhesives and though it’s not as strong as e6000 on plastic, it provides a very strong bong for fabrics and paper and most importantly has no harmful fumes.

Hotfix rhinestones are the third kind of crystal they have the same foil backing as flatbacks with what looks like a rubber washer backing over the foil. The backing is a specially developed glue that provides a strong bond when used on fabrics. To use a hotfix crystal you need heat which can either be applied with an iron or a hotfix applicator. These are wands that look much like a soldering iron with interchangeable tips to fit the various sized crystals available. Screw the correct size tip on the end of the applicator, leave it to heat up for 2 minutes and it’s then ready to use, you simply pick up the rhinestone with the tip and press it onto the fabric, where the adhesive is melted by the heat from the tip.

The final type of rhinestones is a non foil back crystal which is has the cut glass face but no reflective backing. They are used in situations where light is intended to pass through the crystal to create a diamond like effect in pieces of jewellery where they can be held in place with special settings.

So I gave it to him, and went back in line. 20 min later, the guy comes back to the front, and was like “you guys waited from 8am? wow. Where is Sara” and I tell him I’m here. He was like “you gave her the book right?” and I was like “yea” and he said she was crying! she was sooo touched, that she couldn’t speak. he then asked me what color my hair was, and I said “brown” and he reported back thru a walkie talkie, and said “brown” .. and I was like wtf? why does she need to know that? haha. he then also asked how many friends I have, and I said “6 of us are inline” then he said ok. anyways, so he then tells me that gaga loved the book so much, that she is letting me go in early to MEET her!!!! That’s when in front of all my friends and everyone else there, I balled my eyes out. I mean, cried sooooo hard. I couldn’t believe it. I thanked him, and he said to wait there.
